Lotusphere, now is really over

Just a couple of minutes and than I will be board to FRA. It was an amazing Lotusphere, and the last surprise was here at the Orlando International Airport: free Internet WI-FI. Well in Italy is not really the same, in the majority of the airports you have to pay to connect.

Now they start boarding ... Buzz, Fraci I'm coming!

Windows single sign-on for web clients

Yesterday during the session ID101 "New Single Sign-on Improvements for your IBM Lotus Notes and Domino Windows Environments", we had a big news for Domino: IBM are working on the Windows single sign-on for web clients. Based on spnego, it will work only between Windows system (client and server).

Hope they will release this soon, in the slides they use the term "future release". Domino 8.5.x? Domino 9? Who knows ... will see.

@If ( "You complete the conference eval form"; "You will receive this"; "It's a pityy"); @All

This year we have a black T-shirt with a big yellow, "Resonance" logo on the back.

You can complete the Lotusphere 2009 evaluation form online. It's here:

Multiple selections and then, mark all the docs you select as read/unread ...

And now, with current 8.5, we have support for Firefox 2 and 3, as well as on Windows. In the future releases Nokia S60 and Google Android!

Day 1 at Lotusphere: a bad OGS, a even more better client and DAOS+IDVault religion

Today I have attend at the following sessions:

Opening General Session
As usually happen, big show: this year we have Blue Man Group and Dan Aykroyd. The new Lotus Software General Manager, Bob Picciano, announces significant grow in the yellow brand: 16 consecutive quarters of growth and more than 12,000 new customers in the last 12 months. If you put apart (hey Lotus! Why named Live? Does it look familiar to you? Not to me for sure ...), this year seems that everything is focused on mobile market, such as Sametime and XPages on BlackBerry device news. But if you go a little bit in deep there are tons of news not announced in OGS. On Monday I completely agree with Nathan but right now (Tuesday evening), I change my mind. Definitely. I will talk about this later during the week.

ID101 What's New in the IBM Lotus Notes Client
Upcoming: better "right click" menu, accept/decline appointment in the preview and sidebar "todo" widget. In the future just 1 word "federation" (contacts federation and mail federation) and total recall: a sort of history on the documents, views and other stuff users visit. Sound similar to browser history but it's searchable!

BP111 Reports, Charts and Graphs 2.0
Charts and Graphs with client, with browser, with widget, with javascript, with Flash. Really cool!

BP213 The low-down on LDAP
SHOW101 ID Vault, Roaming and DAOS: get ahead of the curve with IBM Lotus Domino 8.5
Soon you can find the slide available somewhere after that DAOS and IDVault will not be a secret anymore.

BOF 316 Meet the Performace Team
64 bit is your friends, Linux is definitely your our friends.

Last but not least, happy 20th birthday Notes!

Dopplr: 2008 personal report

Finally today Dopplr release my 2008 personal report in PDF, it's cool! I spend 88 days traveling, longest in Pelugo for holiday and the further distance I traveled was Orlando (once for Lotusphere). My carbon for 2008 is 5,844 kg CO2 and I have the same velocity as a duck!

Quack! Quack!

Special guest at OGS: Dan Aykroyd

Dan Aykroyd, from wikipedia:

Daniel Edward "Dan" Aykroyd, CM (born July 1, 1952) is an Academy Award-nominated and Emmy Award-winning Canadian comedian, actor, screenwriter, musician, winemaker and ufologist. He was an original cast member of Saturday Night Live, an originator of The Blues Brothers (with John Belushi) and Ghostbusters and has had a long career as a film actor and screenwriter.

Day 0 at Lotusphere: BDD, Designer 8.5 (and 8.5.1), Admin Jumstart and Domino on Linux 101

Today I have attend at the following sessions:

BDD211 You Have to Think and Act Like an Executive ....If You Want to Sell to Them!
The talk in a couple of concepts:

  • CEO is stressed by different actors (board, competition, share holders, leading team) so he get short attentions by you.
  • Do not fall down in the attentions trick: contents get only 7% of the pike, the other preponderant factors are voice and most important body languages (It's not only about the study who the speaker report but also about cognitive science).
BDD210 Slaying the Dragon 2009: How Small Partners Land Big Clients.

JMP206 Introducing IBM Lotus Domino Designer 8.5, Now with Eclipse!
Here the key message is: X-Page, custom controls an themes get you a complete separation between datas and his presentations. Maybe in 8.5.1 we will see LotusScript and Java editors in the brand new Domino Designer in Eclipse.

JMP102 IBM Lotus Domino Administrator Jumpstart.
I discuss about this in a previous post and finally I run the DCT on one of my servers and as you can see it's a 8.0.2 GNU/Linux Debian server.

"Show 'n Tell" session, do you think is better than "hands on"?

The "Show 'n tell" track is the new Lotusphere sessions container, it replaces last years "hands on" tracks.

Do you think SHOW format is better than HND format? I think is different. All the SHOW I attended today was simply great but, if I'm to be honest, I miss a little bit the interaction that HND and the use of the workstation can provide.

I'm sure it's a big effort for the organization to setup HND classes but every year I have attended HND I got back home lot of contents and I had improve my skill faster. The good thing about SHOW is the numbers of attenders: HND has really a poor capacity and SHOW extend the limit a lot. Also, you can use your pc during the sessions so it's not so bad. Just different.

What do you think?

JMP102 IBM Lotus Domino Administration JumpStart

A general but interesting overview of the Domino Administration client. Here are listed 3 key points that impress me more than other:

  • New desktop policy in 8.5: you can set notes.ini clients variables in a consistent way. Do you remember this? Forget it!
  • DOAS is not Simple Object Commostore or a sort of that. IBMers save around 20% of disk space. Do you think disk space is almost free? Yes, but time is not.
  • You have to star today in using Domino Configuration Tuner. Domino 8.5 is not required, you just need a Notes 8 client! About Domino Configuration Tuner here is your first resource to be consulted.

Welcome Reception: everything is (almost) ready

As you can see in the picture above, everything is almost ready for this evening party: the big banner say "I love the night life". Well Americans has a strange concept of "night": the party will end at 09:00 pm. :-)

In every case the early end is a good think, session at Lotusphere will start early in the morning (around 07:00 am) and is better to go to sleep early as well.

Day -1 at Lotusphere

This is my 5th time in Disney Area (3 times for Lotusphere). Just sun, relax and a good Mexican food lunch at San Angel Inn. This year as well the last one I stay at Port Orleans Riverside Resort. Luckily me room is located very near to the Lotusphere bus stop located ad 85 block.

That's why we do not use Alitalia for intercontinental flights

I've just listen a radio talk show who claim that the Italian airway Alitalia has really few intercontinental connections from Italy. We have just two intercontinental hub served by Alitalia: Malpensa (near Milan, the economic capital of the country) and Fiumicino (in Rome, the capital city). From Malpensa Airport, 3 intercontinental flights: daily to NY, 3 times a week to San Paolo and Tokio. From Fiumicino Airport the situation is different but not so good: 19 intercontinental connections.

I hope the information is not correct... I remember some years ago when Alitalia was one of the best airlines and both business and economy class had really an excellent meal service.

So that's why it's not so simple to flight direct to Orlando for Lotusphere for example. I will flight through Frankfurt with Lufthansa (which is my favouirite airline).

  1. Le risorse web su Lotusphere sono numerose, un elenco veloce: Lotusphere website, The Taking Notes podcast, Chris Miller's blog, Gonzo wiki, The Power of the Lotusphere Community - The Lotusphere blog!

  4. Questa non la traduco: Your conference badge is your life. DO NOT LOSE IT!

Thanks Andy and see you in Orlando!
